The boardwalk sections of Walnut Creek Trail (on either side of South New Hope Road) are looking like a teenage boy's room--the trees are shaggy enough that the limbs are getting down in your eyes and the floor is a mess (limbs and pine cones all over).

The trails in Buffaloe Road Athletic Park are being blocked by tree limbs, affecting cycling on all trails and even walking at a few points. This includes the trail segments near the park entrance and back by the Aquatic Center.

Tree branches all along the Neuse River Greenway are getting long and low, to the point that they're interfering with the bicycle riders. I haven't pinpointed a specific area because this problem occurs all along the Greenway.

Heading southbound on Blue Ridge Rd. at the Lake Boone Trail intersection, I was in the left turn lane, waiting to do a U-turn. When I got the green arrow, I started my U-turn, and nearly ran into a car that was turning right from Lake Boone Trail onto northbound Blue Ridge Rd. I looked back over my shoulder and verified that I did not have a sign warning me about people making right turns from Lake Boone Trail, and then I checked the light that was for the driver coming from Lake Boone Trail. He had a green right turn arrow, and there was no sign warning him that he needed to yield to anybody making a U-turn on Blue Ridge Rd. In other words, we both had green arrows indicating that we could do just what we were doing, even though that it was going to put us in the exact same spot on the road at the same time. This is a recipe for a collision at that intersection. This must be fixed now!

Neuse River Greenway bridge over Bridges Lake, just north of the Milburnie Park access point.

I've previously reported (back in April) that this bridge is vastly substandard compared to every other bridge along the Neuse River Greenway (or the Walnut Creek and Crabtree Creek greenways, for that matter). The wood is warped and irregular and broken in some places, making walking or riding on it a very unpleasant (and somewhat unsafe) experience. It's as as if the contractor used wood from an old barn.

A city of Raleigh staffer responded that the decking on this bridge was scheduled for replacement this year, but to date there's been no work done. It's already mid-October (and I doubt this is going to be done in December!), so is there a status update on the planned work?

Neuse River Greenway bridge over Bridges Lake, just north of the Milburnie Park access point.

I bike the greenway from Horseshoe Park down to detour next to Barwell Road. This bridge is vastly substandard compared to every other bridge on this segment. The wood is warped and irregular, making riding on it a very unpleasant experience. It's as as if the contractor used wood from an old barn.

Either someone on city staff grossly under-specified the material requirements for this bridge, or else the contractor ripped off the city. Senior staff should inspect this bridge to determine whether legal action should be taken against the contractor. Quite frankly, this bridge should be torn down and rebuilt to the standards used on all of the other bridges in this segment.

  • 2901-2999 Southall Road Raleigh, North Carolina - Northeast

The stretch of Southall road between Easthampton Drive and Castlebrook Drive is unsafely marked for a 45 mph speed limit, despite the fact that there are 2 blind-entrance intersections (with yellow warning signs indicating a safe speed of 35 mph) and a dramatic curve (marked with yellow warning arrow signs) between those two roads. South of Easthampton, the speed limit on Southall is 35 mph; as you drive north, you see the first blind intersection warning, but before you actually get to that intersection, the speed limit changes to 45 mph (see the attached photo--the white sign in the distance is the 45 mph sign; from there the up-coming intersection that the yellow sign warns about is invisible). This makes no logical sense whatsoever!

Having Southall north of Castlebrook be 45 mph is fine--that's a straight stretch of road. Having cars going 45 south of Castlebrook is dangerous, however, making a left turn out of either of the two intersections south of Castlebrook (both going into the Amberfield neighborhood) an adrenaline-pumping moment.

The culvert under Southall Road for Rocky Brook has become clogged. The attached photo shows the upstream side. Southall has already flooded once because of this, and with all the rain we're having this week will probably flood again.
